FAQs about Braces

Braces are an orthodontic method for helping you achieve a straighter smile by repositioning teeth that are crooked or out of place. Braces Bracescan also close gaps between teeth, as well as correct jaw and bite alignment issues. Several types of braces are available and our dentists, Dr. Minda Sapir and Dr. Shabtai Sapir, can help you choose the right type to best suit your needs. For braces in the Norfolk area, visit Norfolk Family & Pediatric Dentistry.

Are There Different Types of Braces?

We offer three main types of braces at our Norfolk dental practice, including conventional metal and clear ceramic. In general, most types of braces involve the use of brackets, wires, and bands. Brackets are affixed to the teeth in the front of the mouth, while bands are placed around the molars. Wires are used to join the brackets and bands affixed to each tooth together.

With both conventional metal braces and clear ceramic the brackets are generally placed on the front of the teeth. All types of braces are highly effective for straightening crooked teeth, closing large or small gaps between teeth, repositioning teeth that are out of place, and correcting jaw or bite alignment issues.

What is Invisalign?

Invisalign is an alternative to braces for straightening your smile. Instead of brackets, band, and wires, Invisalign straightens the teeth and closes small gaps using aligner trays that fit over each row of teeth. Similar to braces, the trays gently exert pressure on the teeth to move them in the desired direction. A distinct feature that makes Invisalign an appealing option for some patients is that the aligner trays are clear, which makes them extremely discreet. The trays are also removable so they can be taken out to brush and floss more easily.

How Do I Care for My Teeth When I Have Braces?

Caring for your teeth when you have braces can require a bit more effort. The brackets, bands, and wires can make it challenging to thoroughly clean between and around teeth. However, there are several habits you can develop to keep your teeth clean and healthy. Helpful habits that can help you better care for your teeth with braces include:

  • Avoid chewing gum or eating sticky foods
  • Avoid biting into hard candies and foods
  • Avoid biting your fingernails or chewing on pens or pencils
  • Use a water pick when cleaning teeth
  • Use a floss threader to clean between teeth
  • Use an interdental brush to clean around brackets, bands, and wires

Braces can help you achieve the smile you desire by straightening crooked teeth, closing gaps, and aligning your bite. A dentist can help you choose the right type of braces for you based on your needs. We offer a no-cost consult where we can help you choose the right type of braces for you based on your needs and to achieve the best results.
